From Jim Stalker
These are a few things that need in be “tweaked” for a lack of a better word. For instance, the streets in Creston are rough. I’m not faulting the city crews. I think they do what they can but there’s just too much work to do. Because of the nature of blacktop that is just a mixture of oil, gravel, and heat, there’s an erosion factor is caused by the weather. The edges of most of these streets have just washed away. Without a major repair, filling a pothole is only temporary and often leaves the same roughness. Maybe we need an outside contractor to bring all our streets up to par?
There are also a few individual things we could do better. Stopping at stop signs instead of just pausing when we see no one to yield to is always important. Paying closer attention to traffic rules. Probably 10 years after we abolished one-way parking, people are still parking on the wrong side of the street.
Here’s an important one at this time of the year when keeping the grass cut isn’t so important, removing the snow from the sidewalks is all important. Mail delivery, newspaper, general delivery, and the people who walk for pleasure or out of need rely on clean sidewalks, and it is the homeowner and renter’s responsibility to keep them that way. I believe there is even a fine that can be levied for those who do not maintain their sidewalks.
There is also an ordinance to deal with pet droppings on sidewalks, but that one is hard to enforce unless witnessed.
These infractions may seem small and I’m sure we’ve all (including myself) been guilty of one or two at some point, and we could all do better. That will be my New Year’s resolution.
