No dance floor ‘moves’ this New Year’s Eve

Nothing emphasizes how parenthood has changed me better than my thought process leading up to tonight’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Not long ago — about five years — during my single sports editor days, tonight was a perfect opportunity to de-stress, have a few beers and socialize in uptown Creston. I’d shoot pool and when the time grew closer to midnight I would too often find myself in the unfamiliar territory of a dance floor.

Sorry to anyone who saw the “moves” of this white guy between the years of 2005 and 2009.

This year though, my plans include more relaxation and being at home with Stormy Lee and Harper when the shiny ball drops on 2014 — even if Harper’s fast asleep in her crib.

News outlets across the United States this week reflected on 2013 and published their top stories of the year. We did the same in Monday’s edition of the News Advertiser.

Below I’d like to share some of the best moments of my life in 2013.

#1: The birth of Harper. I’ll never forget the seven days spent together at Greater Regional Medical Center. I didn’t always enjoy sleeping on the hospital’s extendable couch, but those seven days helping Stormy Lee get back to full speed and bonding as a family won’t soon leave my memory.

#2: Coaching baseball. I love my job here at the News Advertiser, but I also loved getting out of this office, onto the green grass of a baseball diamond and coaching a group of energizing eighth-grade and Creston High School baseball players.

I loved the pregame fun of “two-ball,” throwing batting practice, opening a fresh bag of sunflowers seeds. My JV team — comprised of mostly eighth graders — finished with a record of 11-9-1. They were a memorable group, I know, because when I read our sports section each day I’m always on the hunt for their names.

#3: New house. After months of hunting with our realtor, Stormy Lee and I finally agreed on our house of the future. Stormy has verbally committed to living in the house for 10 years, but I plan on getting that in writing.

The year was filled with many other joys and some tribulations. I’ll end this year with showing one of the most popular photos published in our newspaper in 2013. I found this photo when organizing our top stories on Sunday.

The photo — taken in March — was very popular, garnering nearly 10,000 views on our Facebook page and 106 shares. See the photo, right.
