SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO—The Central College men’s basketball team was consistently in front and outlasted tournament host Sacred Heart (P.R.) 81-72 Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Colby Taylor of Creston made his second career start and connected on 5-of-8 3-pointers en route to a career-high 16 points while also grabbing six rebounds for the Dutch (7-4).
“Colby shot the ball very well. He played a major role in opening up the inside with his outside shot,” said Central coach Craig Douma.
Senior center Spencer Bakerink of Creston scored nine points on 4-of-5 shooting while matching Taylor with six rebounds for the Dutch.
On Saturday, Central played stingy defense in a 67-54 win over Bridgewater (Va.) at the same San Juan event. Taylor had four points and six rebounds in his first start. Bakerink had five rebounds and one point.
Central breaks for more than one week before opening Iowa Conference action against last season’s conference co-champion Luther College (7-3 overall) Jan. 8 at Pella.
