SWCC ceremony

The Southwestern Community College athletic department is hosting a ceremony and reception to honor SWCC’s volleyball team, 2013 regional champions and national championship participants, during the Feb. 1 home basketball matchups featuring the SWCC Spartans vs. Iowa Lakes.

The afternoon kicks off with the women’s basketball game at 1 p.m. in the Student Center gymnasium. The men’s game follows at 3 p.m. The volleyball recognition ceremony will be held during half-time of the men’s game at approximately 3:45 p.m.  A reception will be held immediately following the men’s game on the upper level of the SWCC Student Center.

SWCC’s volleyball team, under the direction of head coach Melissa Blessington, ended their season with a record of 9-2 in the conference and 37-10 overall.  The Spartans ended up fifth at the 2013 NJCAA DII Volleyball National Championships in Perrysburg, Ohio, defeating Grand Rapids, Mich., in three straight sets in their final match on Nov. 23.  Blessington was named the region’s Coach of the Year.

Makeup game

Creston’s girls basketball game originally scheduled Monday vs. Interstate 35 will be made up Jan. 27, with junior varsity at 6 p.m. and varsity to follow.

300 game

T.J. Redding bowled a 300 game Jan. 3 while rolling a 793 series in the TGIF League at Pine Valley Golf and Bowl.

Redding’s other games are 245 and 248.

Girls basketball

A basketball skills program for girls pre-kindergarten through second grade will be held in eight sessions in January and February before a halftime performance at a Creston varsity girls game on Feb.13.

Travis Turner will direct the program that includes a fee of $20, which includes a T-shirt and basketball. Registration forms are available at local schools.

All sessions will be held at the Early Childhood Center gym from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16; Monday, Jan. 20; Thursday, Jan. 23; Monday, Jan. 27; Thursday, Jan. 30; Monday, Feb. 3; Thursday, Feb. 6; and Monday, Feb. 10.

The halftime performance will be at halftime of the 7:30 p.m. varsity game against Clarinda.
