Panthers move one step closer to H-10 crown

Creston/O-M senior Adam Baker tries to work in a half Nelson on Harlan's Caleb Rihner to earn back points during their match at 170 pounds on Thursday. Baker pinned Rihner in 3:34, earning one of Creston/O-M's seven victories by fall in a 50-24 win over Harlan.

There’s still work to do, but the Creston/Orient-Macksburg wrestling team cleared the last major roadblock to a Hawkeye 10 Conference championship here Thursday with a 50-24 dual win over Harlan.

Barring an upset loss in one of the final three duals of the season — against Red Oak, Shenandoah or Council Bluffs St. Albert — the Panthers will wrap up the dual team conference championship.

The Panthers improved to 9-0 overall for the season and 7-0 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference. Harlan drops to 6-4 and 3-2. Clarinda and Glenwood both have just one loss in the Hawkeye 10, with Creston/O-M being that loss for each team.

Head coach Darrell Frain was pleased with his team’s effort here Thursday. After Tuesday’s duals against Lewis Central and Carroll Kuemper Catholic, Frain said he didn’t feel his team performed to its potential.

“I definitely think we took a step up tonight,” Frain said. “Now, we just can’t take any backward steps. Effort was really good, mental approach was better, our warmup was better. Now we just have to keep progressing from here on out.”

Fast start

The Panthers started the dual on fire, pinning the Cyclones against the wall early with three straight pins to open the dual.

Senior Kruz Adamson started the night by pinning Jacob Priester in 5:05 at 120 pounds. Wyatt Thompson followed by pinning Marshall Tucker in 1:09 and Spencer Wray gave the Panthers an 18-0 lead with a pin in 1:08.

Sophomore Joey Huntington secured a technical fall at 4:14 of his match at 138 pounds with Jacob Koke.

“Coming in, I thought we were favored in those first three or four weight classes,” Frain said. “When Kruz got the pin, we just kind of got on a roll with bonus points. Anytime you can win the first four matches, it really dictates the pace of the whole meet, because it gets you a big lead and you can kind of open up after that.”

Ranked battles

The match at 145 pounds featured two ranked wrestlers in Creston/O-M freshman Chase Shiltz and Harlan’s Broghan Kelly.

Kelly tried to slow the match down and keep the score low. Shiltz led 2-0 after one period and 3-2 after the second, before scoring a 4-2 decision.

“Kelly’s a state-ranked kid,” Frain said. “Chase wrestled well. I don’t think he wrestled as well as he can, but Kelly kind of slowed things down and kept it close the whole time. Give credit to him for slowing it down, but Chase kept wrestling and got the win.”

The Panthers went on another string of matches ending in bonus points as Tayler Pettit (160), Adam Baker (170) and Trevor Frain (182) each pinned their way to victory. Pettit earned his pin in 48 seconds and Frain had a short night of work, finishing his match in just 12 seconds.

Freshman Kadon Hulett battled well against ninth-ranked Cale Stork at 195 pounds, leading 2-1 after one period. But, Hulett gave up a reversal early in the second period and got caught in a bad situation, as Stork pinned him in 2:47.

“For a freshman stepping up against a state-ranked kid that placed at state last year, he came out and really got after him and wrestled well,” Frain said. “I really give Kadon credit for what he did in that match.”

That brought up another match with ranked wrestlers, as Seth Maitlen, ranked 10th at 195 pounds, wrestled up against sixth-ranked 220-pounder Dallon Bendorf. Bendorf secured the pin in 2:43.

Jake Gutschenritter scored a win by fall in 2:58 at 285 pounds over Aaron Johannson. The night ended with Trevor Marlin losing a 14-7 decision at 106 pounds and Brody Frain losing by fall at 113.

“Now we will probably start gearing toward individual stuff, preparing for sectional, district time,” Frain said. “When we get to those points where we have to wrestle those matches for the conference championship, we’ll hit those when we get there. Now, it’s trying to figure out what weight everybody is going to be at and get us established so we’re ready for the end of the month.”

Panther Invitational

Creston/O-M hosts the Panther Invitational Saturday, with wrestling beginning at 11 a.m.

In the past, the tournament has been set up in round robin format, but Frain said there may be too many wrestlers this year, which would cause it to go to an eight-man bracket for each weight class.

Greene County, Dallas Center-Grimes and Bedford/Lenox figure to be some of the top competition at the tournament.
