SWCC women start slow in 33-point loss

BOONE — The DMACC women put it away early Wednesday night, jumping ahead 14-0 on the way to a 63-33 victory over Southwestern.

“We struggled to make some shots and they went on a 14-0 run before we scored from the free throw line,” SWCC coach Addae Houston said. “The halftime score (29-10) would have been closer if we just could have gotten some good looks to fall. It probably could have been like a 10-point game, something we could work with.”

The Lady Bears’ inside strength posed another problem.

“They were just taller than us,” Houston said. “That’s not an excuse, but they were able to convert some offensive rebounds after we defended the first shot well. We couldn’t get defensive rebounds when we needed them.”

Kristin Klocksiem led Southwestern with 10 points and Peyton Russell added nine. Carlee Schumacher led DMACC with 24 points.

DMACC, now fourth in the ICCAC Division II standings at 2-2, improved to 10-6 overall. SWCC fell to 1-2 in league play and 3-11 overall heading into a 1 p.m. home game Saturday against Ellsworth, in the cellar of the nine-team league at 0-2, and 5-9 overall.

Ellsworth is coming off a loss Wednesday to Southeastern, which is the team Southwestern gained its first league victory against last weekend. Houston is encouraged his team can get to the .500 level again in conference play with a strong performance.

“They have played some teams very similarly to us,” Houston said. “We can play with them. You know both teams will come out fighting to get a conference win.”

DMACC (66) — Carlee Schumacher 24.

SOUTHWESTERN (33) — Kristin Klocksiem 10, Peyton Russell 9, Darian Polson 8, J’myrehea Douglas 5, Morgan Knorr 3, Jordan Williamson 3.

DMACC — 29 66

SWCC — 10 33
