Donnie Johnston, 78, of Afton died Jan. 12, 2014, at Afton Care Center.

Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, at Greenlawn Cemetery in Afton. The Rev. Bob Sauser will officiate. Open visitation will be noon to 3 p.m. Thursday with family present 2 to 3 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., Afton. Memorials may be given to Iowa Regular Baptist Camp in Ventura. Online condolences may be left at www.powersfh.com.

Donald “Donnie” Eugene Johnston, son of Velma Darlene (Handley) and William Ronald Johnston, was born Oct. 25, 1935, at a home north of Thayer.

Donnie lived in the Thayer area in his early life, before moving to Creston in 1977.

Donnie worked at Innovative Industries for many years.

Donnie moved to Afton in 1995, where he resided at Community Adult Residential Environment (CARE) for many years.

Donnie was a member of First Baptist Church in Creston.

Donnie is survived by his nieces, Faith (husband Brian) Burkhalter of Creston, Karyn (husband Willie) Tierney of Indianapolis, Ind., and Vivian Schwab of Ankeny; sister-in-law Betty Lou Johnston of Creston, CARE family and numerous cousins.

Donnie was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dean Johnston; aunt and uncle, LeRoy and Arlene Johnston; aunts, Dortha Handley, Pauline Handley and Jean Bruner; uncles, Harold Handley and Leslie Handley; and nephew-in-law Brian Schwab.
