Spartan men fall to NIACC

Published: Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014 12:50 a.m. CST

The Southwestern men struggled to deal with NIACC’s defensive pressure in the first half here on Saturday, as the Trojans built a 49-26 halftime lead en route to a 90-56 win over the Spartans.

“They’ve been playing really well,” Southwestern head coach Mike Holmes said about NIACC. “They have some long guards. We’ve been playing a lot of dribble attack teams, so our defense has been more geared toward pinching in the lane. We knew we were going to have to get extended against them. That’s not the greatest thing for us, because it leaves our interior exposed.”

Still, much of the damage done to the Spartans came from NIACC’s talented guard play. David Humphries scored 30 points and Sam Skogen added 16 for the Trojans.

“The beginning of the game, we didn’t handle the press very well,” Holmes said. “We spotted them too many tunrovers and runouts. We just never really asserted our game onto them like they did to us.”

Elliott Hamdeed led the Spartans with 18 points, while Mataika Koyamainavure and Tanner Kellogg each scored 11 points. Jared Theis chipped in six points.

“My young guys are having trouble putting 40 minutes together, “Holmes said. “They’re having trouble avoiding runs against. That’s where we have to grow. We have to get to a point where we can be competitive. We’ve shown that we can, we just haven’t show that on a consistent basis.”

Southwestern drops to 7-11 overall and 1-4 in ICCAC Division II play. The Spartans travel to Kirkwood on Wednesday.
