What Creston has to offer

Sad to see that businesses are closing in Creston, but sometimes that opens a door to new business. One such type that I’ve become more familiar with is antiques. We’ve drawn people from across the state and Nebraska because that’s what they do in their retirement years. If Creston had at least five more antique stores, we could become a destination point for these antiquers.

The smaller town of Walnut envisioned that with their limited store fronts they could become a destination point for antique hunters, and they have accomplished that feat. Creston could do that also.

But Creston is in a position to take it further, because we already have our support businesses in place; places to eat, stay over, and fuel up, as well as unique stores to shop in. Quilters already come here by the bus load. And, lest you’ve forgotten, in the wake of electronic books, we have one of the last remaining new and used bookstores in the state, perhaps the world.

History? Think about it. A restored post office turned into a state-of-the-art scrapbooking store. The old power plant, where they originally produced electricity for the area, converted into a home development store. The restored Depot could provide hours of “watch” entertainment for the multiple trains running through town. (Although the deaf might enjoy it even more.) There are rail fans everywhere. We need to point out our attractions to them.

We are bubbling over with history. Most of the exciting buildings downtown have a story to tell. We are ripe for filling our empty buildings with antiques. If Walnut can do it, so can we.

We have the potential with so many other drawing cards, the lakes, our hospital facilities, and yes, even Walmart, the theater, Southwestern College, unique restaurants, well, the list goes on and on. I didn’t even mention the unique restaurants in Afton, Orient and Diagonal, just a short drive away.

As I look back on what I’ve written above, I realize what a great place we live in and hesitate, if it weren’t that the downtown needs a little tweaking, to even tell you about it.
