Helen M. Rectenbaugh, 88, of Des Moines died Dec. 23, 2013, in Des Moines.

A memorial service will be held later this year in Fontanelle. Steen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.steenfunerals.com.

Helen M. Rectenbaugh, daughter of Elsie (Popp) and Louis Rectenbaugh, was born Feb. 6, 1925, in Adair County.

Helen graduated from Bridgewater-Fontanelle High School in 1942.

Helen worked as a dude ranch cook and beautician before working as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell, retiring after 35 years. She then worked part time for many years at Thrasher’s Hardware store.

Helen is survived by her nieces, Julie (Keith) Armstrong and Karen (Mark) Neff; nephew Mark Rectenbaugh; great-nieces, Meagan Rectenbaugh, Michelle (Kevin) Harrell, Jordan Armstrong and Chelsea Armstrong; great-nephews, Michael Rectenbaugh, Christopher Neff, Noah Armstrong and Jonas Armstrong; and great-great-nephew Liam Harrell.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents and brother John C. Rectenbaugh.
