AFTON — Afton Fitness Center, 100 N. Douglas, is giving area residents a little extra motivation to carry out their New Year’s resolution goals. The center celebrated its grand opening Jan. 6.
“We’ve had really good turnout so far,” said owner Laura Tallmon. “I think the biggest thing that’s led to some success here in the beginning is a huge range of age groups.”
Tallmon, 36, said the youngest member at the new gym is 8 and the oldest is 80.
Individuals interested in joining the gym can check out the Facebook page to get prices, or stop in to the gym during staffed hours (see sidebar for hours).
There are three options available — one-month, six-months and one-year memberships — and prices vary depending on age and relationship status.
“I just think the fact that our machines are kind of useable for anybody really helps us out,” Tallmon said.
The workout equipment has a variety of cardio machines such as treadmills and ellipticals. Individuals also have the option to use circut weight training machines and free weights.
One age group Tallmon was excited to see participating was high-school students. She said she hopes their participation continues to grow, especially during the summer months.
Afton Fitness Center is in the process of adding fitness classes. The first class will be a six-week zumba class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. starting Feb. 4.
“There is an additional charge, but being a member will get you a much better rate,” Tallmon said.
The charge for the class is $25 for members and $45 for nonmembers. Tallmon said the additional charge should help keep participation levels consistent for the entire length of the class.
Tallmon said there has been interest in adding yoga and pilates classes in the future, but she is still working to find instructors and schedule times.
Afton Fitness Center is also kicking off a team competition to motivate members to stick with training plans. Teams can register during staffed hours.
“I think especially at the beginning of the year when people make New Year’s resolutions to lose weight, it is easier to do things as a team and get a little support behind you,” Tallmon said.
Team members log the number of hours spent working out and a winning group will be crowned at the end of the 12-week challenge in April.
Tallmon, a nurse in Winterset, was looking for a way to stay active, but was struggling to find a gym she could join that fit her schedule.
By the time she drove from Winterset to pick up her children — Ty and Mia — from East Union School, driving even further to workout was not ideal.
“I started talking to some people and found out there were a lot of people interested,” Tallmon said.
Since the number of hours Tallmon and her husband Adam can spend at Afton Fitness Center are limited, members receive a key fob to gain access to the building 24/7.
