Richard Briner, 83, of Creston died Jan. 25, 2014, at Greater Regional Medical Center.  

A memorial gathering will be 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery at a later date. Visitation with family present will be 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday during the memorial gathering at the funeral home. Memorials may be given in Richard Briner’s name.  Online condolences may be left at www.powersfh.com.

Richard Burl Briner, son of  Violet (Grimm) and Burl Briner, was born Sept. 8, 1930, in Sergeant Bluff, Neb.

Richard was educated in the Ringgold County Schools. Richard grew up in Ringgold County, where he drove a gravel truck with his uncle Lloyd. 

On Jan. 17, 1952, Richard married Marcella Johnson in Georgia.

Richard served in the United States Army 1952-54.

After his discharge in 1954, Richard and Marcella settled in Ringgold County. There he farmed and was later a marshall in Diagonal. 

Richard and Marcella later divorced. 

On Dec. 31, 1982, Richard married Dora May (Fisher) Sparr in Creston. They lived most of their married life in Creston.

Rich drove a truck for Creston Transportation and later for Cropmate, retiring in 1992.

Richard was a member of FOE Eagles Lodge No. 1398 of Creston. 

Richard is survived by his wife Dora Briner of Creston, daughter Lynne Harry (husband Scott) of Orient; sons, Jim (wife Joyce) Johnson of Mount Ayr, Allen (wife Marcia) of Kansas City, Mo., Steve (wife Paula) Briner of Weatherford, Texas, Kenny (wife Karla) Shaw of Creston and Mike (wife Cindy) Briner of Creston; brothers, Earl (wife Colleen) Briner of Tingley, Van (wife Elaine) Briner of Ottumwa and Greg Briner of Tingley; sisters, Claudette Young of Leon, Pam (husband Dan) Weigel of Greenfield and Debbie Briner of Grant City, Mo.; brother-in-law George Dailey of Maloy; 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, son Kevin in 1997, daughter Sandy in 2012, grandson Blake Briner in 2013, brother Tyronne Briner; and sisters, Joquetta Briner at birth and Alverta Dailey in 2009
