No. 18 Lakers sink Spartans early

The Southwestern men got themselves in an early hole they couldn’t overcome in a 64-40 loss to 18th-ranked Iowa Lakes Saturday.

The first five minutes was competitive, with Iowa Lakes leading 8-7, but a 9-0 run over the next eight minutes made it 17-7. The Spartans still hadn’t scored in double figures yet with two minutes left in the half, trailing 22-9.

The half ended at 28-10 as Diamontae McKinley sank three free throws after being fouled just before the buzzer.

Iowa Lakes, now 5-2 in the conference and 14-6 overall, owned only a 36-30 advantage over the final 20 minutes in a much better Spartan performance.

“We just turned it over too many times in the first half,” SWCC coach Mike Holmes said after his team fell to 1-6 in the league and 8-13 overall. “Our goal is four turnovers a half, and that was 11 more possessions than that of not even getting a look. Unless you have a really prolific offense, you can’t afford to lose that many possessions.”

Southwestern cut the margin to 13 early in the second half, but could come no closer, despite having only five turnovers after halftime.

Sophomore guard Larry Mason, playing early with an ankle injury, did not see action the rest of the day and was in street clothes in the second half. Holmes was unsure of his status as the team prepared Monday for Wednesday’s game at Clinton.

Sophomore center Jared Theis led the Spartans with 16 points Saturday and Tanner Kellogg added 10. The Spartan defense held South Dakota State recruit Deondre Parks to 11 points for Iowa Lakes. Latrell Love led the Lakers with 14 points.
