BOONE — The Iowa High School Athletic Association announced Wednesday the district pairings for Class 3A boys basketball.
Creston opens play at 8 p.m. on Feb. 24 against Atlantic in Atlantic. It will be the second game of a doubleheader, with Glenwood and Winterset squaring off in the opener at 6:30 p.m.
The Class 3A District 16 final will be played 7 p.m. on Feb. 27 at Shenandoah.
The Panthers own wins over the other three teams in District 16 this season, but have also lost to both Atlantic and Glenwood in the past week.
According to the BC Moore computer rankings, Creston is ranked 33rd in Class 3A. Opening-round opponent Atlantic is ranked 44th. Glenwood is ranked 23rd and Winterset is 63rd.
District 16 is paired up with District 15, which includes Harlan vs. ADM and Perry vs. Denison-Schleswig.
Harlan is ranked third in the BC Moore computer rankings and fourth in the Associated Press poll. Denison-Schleswig is ranked 40th by BC Moore, while ADM is ranked 50th and Perry is ranked 55th.
The District 15 champion will meet the District 16 champion at 7 p.m. on March 3 at Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln in the Class 3A Substate 8 final.
In Class 2A, Southwest Valley will open up District 15 play at Council Bluffs St. Albert at 8 p.m. on Feb. 17. The other quarterfinal game on that half of the bracket includes Shenandoah and Red Oak.
The winners of those two games will play in the District 15 semifinal at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 20 in Treynor.
On the top half of the bracket, Missouri Valley plays Clarinda at St. Albert on Feb. 17, with the winner playing Treynor on Feb. 20. The District 15 final is 7 p.m. Feb. 25 at Glenwood.
Treynor and Council Bluffs St. Albert are the top two ranked teams by BC Moore in District 15, with Treynor ranking 18th and St. Albert coming in at 29th.
The District 15 champion will play the District 16 champion at 7 p.m. on March 1 in Harlan.
District 16 includes Carroll Kuemper Catholic, OA-BCIG, Ridge View, IKM-Manning, Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto and Cherokee.
Kuemper Catholic is ranked eighth in the BC Moore rankings and fourth in the AP poll.
