The Class 1A State Wrestling Tournament brackets are set and the seven area wrestlers who qualified in Class 1A now know what their paths to the podium look like.

Wrestling action in Class 1A kicks off at 7 p.m. on Thursday, with the first round and first round consolation matches scheduled to last until 10:15 p.m.

Here is a look at each of the seven area state qualifiers and what their brackets look like.

113 class

Fifth-ranked Bedford/Lenox freshman Jared Hensley, 35-1 for the season, opens against Gannon Cook (24-11) of East Buchanan, Winthrop.

After that opening round match, Hensley will have to earn a trip to the finals. His likely quarterfinal matchup would be against sixth-ranked Briar Cochran (41-3) of Moravia.

Also in Hensley’s half of the bracket are the top two ranked wrestlers in Class 1A at 113 pounds. Highland Riverside Freshman Bryce West (43-1) and Clarion-Goldfield sophomore Josh Portillo (24-0) would meet in the quarterfinals if both win their opening round matches.

Either could be Hensley’s semifinal opponent, should Hensley make it to the semifinals.

120 class

Eighth-ranked Bedford/Lenox junior Dusten Reed (44-5) opens against Hinton junior Cole Mills (44-3).

The second round opponent for Reed, win or lose, would either be fourth-ranked Sheldon Ealy (32-6) of English Valleys or Jesup junior Colton Dietrick (38-8).

Also in Reed’s half of the bracket is third-ranked Riley Klein (46-4) of Underwood and top-ranked Fort Dodge St. Edmond senior Kaden McClintock (24-1). Klein or McClintock could be a semifinal opponent for Reed.

138 class

Mount Ayr senior Erik Freed, ranked eighth in the state at 138 pounds with his 50-4 record, opens the tournament against Northwood Kensett junior Coleby Bratrud (35-5).

Freed’s second-round opponent will either be fourth-ranked Conner Shulista (36-5) of Alburnett or Westwood, Sloan freshman Drew Anderson (42-6).

Top-ranked Jeren Glosser (45-1) of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont would be a potential semifinal opponent for Freed, as would seventh-ranked Wilton junior Zach Keppy (35-8).

145 class

Unranked Bedford/Lenox sophomore Hunter Russel faces a tough test in his opening round match at 145 pounds with Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont junior Blake Marolf (34-2), ranked third.

Awaiting Russel in the second round would be either Woodbury Central junior Luke Klingensmith (41-13) or Wapsie Valley senior Ethan Kleitsch (29-8).

Second-ranked Caleb Wedeking (38-1) of North Butler and fourth-ranked Payton Rice (48-1) of Manson Northwest Webster are also on Russel’s half of the bracket.

160 class

Southwest Valley senior Kallan Schmelzer (33-2), ranked sixth, faces Maquoketa Valley junior Steve Huber (33-13) in the first round.

Fourth-ranked Caden Doll (42-2) of Lynnville-Sully squares off against seventh-ranked Schuyler Rilling (49-8) of Woodbury Central in an opening round match. Win or lose in the opening round and Schmelzer would face either Doll or Rilling in the second round.

Also in Schmelzer’s half of the bracket are second-ranked Jake Hogan (17-1) of Don Bosco, third-ranked Casey Pence (32-0) of West Branch and eighth-ranked Kegen Ginfalsen (40-2) of Central Springs.

182 class

Seventh-ranked Zach Barton (34-6) of Southwest Valley also faces a tough first round match, as he takes on third-ranked Hudson senior Luke Huber (42-1).

Awaiting in the second round for the Southwest Valley senior would be either fifth-ranked Jacob Becker (40-5) of Westwood Sloan or MMC senior Jacob Letsche.

Brennen Grimm (37-7) of English Valleys is also in Barton’s half of the bracket, but aside from Huber and Grimm, there are no other ranked wrestlers standing in Barton’s way on that half of the bracket.

285 class

Mount Ayr junior Joe Ricker (50-2) enters the state tournament ranked fifth in Class 1A, but faces a loaded side of the bracket.

Ricker faces CMB senior Dawson Dahlke (19-13) in the first round, but would have either eighth-ranked Graettinger Terril junior Cody Thompson (41-3) or sixth-ranked Tyler Yonkovic (48-0) in the second round.

Fourth-ranked Clarion-Goldfield senior Mitch Gambrill (34-6) opens against 10th-ranked David Howell (34-1) of East Mills. The winner of that match will likely face Wapello’s top-ranked senior Ryley Howell (30-0) in the quarterfinals.

If Ricker makes it to the semifinals, he would face one of those three rated wrestlers, or Nashua Plainfield senior Blane Bark (33-12).
