Don’t put your long johns away quite yet!
The cold weather looks like it is going to persist into late March or April according to the weather folks I pay attention to. Our new “worst friend” this winter, the Polar Vortex, is going to hang around and make March one of the colder ones in a long time.
I remember just a couple of years ago that many of the local farmers were planting corn by the end of March. At the rate it’s going, the ground may not be thawed until May! I never thought I’d have to worry about what my heat bill would be in March!
The 21st annual St. Malachy’s fundraiser dinner and auction is this Saturday at the Supertel Inn. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at the door or by calling 641-782-7125. It is always a nice evening and the money goes to a great cause — the school of course!
The Creston Volunteer Fire Department has its annual fundraiser on Saturday, March 8. The dance will be at Creston Eagles Club. The band will be Western Outlaws. The funds go to help pay for all the good things the local firefighters do during the year.
I went to visit my son in Lincoln last weekend. We took in the inaugural Baconfeast in Lincoln last Saturday. They had just about every kind of food you can think of with bacon in it, on it or around it.
I had chocolate chip cookies made with bacon grease. One of my long time friends was with me and I thought he was going to eat the whole plate of cookies. My favorite was the maple bacon jerky. There were so many different kinds of bacon concoctions you couldn’t sample them all without having a tummy ache! My oldest son even tried the bacon vodka Bloody Mary — which he gave two thumbs up. There is nothing like a little bacon to make your day!
I see that McDonalds is bringing back the Mighty Wings. I read where they have more than 10 million pounds of the wings in storage since when they appeared last fall. They have a good spice to them if you like hot wings, but they may not be around for too long. So get them while they’re hot!
A lot of the regular TV shows started again this week now that the Olympics are over. I can’t say I watched much of the Olympics this time around. All the reality contests are back in full swing like The Amazing Race, Survivor and The Voice.
This Sunday night is when all the Oscars will be awarded. The favorites for winner of “Best Movie of the Year” is either “12 Years a Slave” or “Gravity.” I’ve only seen two of the nine nominated movies. It’s a sad thing to say, but I think they are making better TV programs nowadays than they are movies. I miss Billy Crystal being the MC. He always made the show fun.
The gas prices are starting to go up faster than you can fill up your car. Two weeks ago, I was paying $2.85 a gallon out of town and now it is up to $3.34 per gallon. It never did get under $3.11 here in Creston. I hear this is not the end and it may well continue up from where it is currently. They are blaming the price hike on the change over from winter to summer blend.
