Taylor honored

PELLA — Central College freshman Colby Taylor of Creston has been named IIAC Athlete of the Week for the week ending Feb. 23. The conference announced performers of the week in five sports, with Taylor representing men’s basketball.

Taylor averaged 23.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals as Central split a pair of of overtime games and clinched the Iowa Conference title.

He registered career-highs in points (24) and rebounds (12) in Central’s 81-78 overtime win at Luther, then added 22 points, nine rebounds and five assists in an 86-83 overtime loss to Wartburg to conclude the regular season. He hit eight 3-pointers during the week, including six in the loss to Wartburg.

Teammate Spencer Bakerink of Creston was one of five seniors honored prior to the Wartburg home finale. Bakerink had two rebounds and two points in the loss.

In Iowa Conference statistics, Taylor is 14th in scoring (13.1), 10th in rebounding (6.0), 10th in steals (0.93) 10th in field goal percentage (48.5) and sixth in free throw percentage (85.3). Bakerink is 17th in rebounding (4.5).

Central has a first-round bye in the conference tournament and will play tonight at home at 7 p.m. against Buena Vista, an 85-83 winner over Wartburg on Tuesday.

Disc tourney

The Southwestern Community College Disc Golf Club is hosting an indoor disc golf tournament Saturday.

Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. in the SWCC Student Center gym. The tournament is free and open to the public. All ages and skill levels are welcome.

Spring 5K

Southern Prairie YMCA’s Make it a Fun Run spring 5K walk/run will be 8 a.m. April 26. The race starts at the Y, 1201 W. Townline St. Packet pickup and same-day registration begins at 7 a.m. Awards will be given in each age category for male and female divisions.

Registration cost is $15 before April 11. This guarantees participants a T-shirt. Cost after April 11 is $20. Creston middle and high school track athletes may participate for $10, and Live Healthy Iowa team participants may receive a $5 registration discount.

A free kids fun run will be held after the 5K at 9 a.m. in conjunction with Healthy Kids Day.
