Monday is St. Patrick’s Day. We always celebrate the day here at the Creston News Advertiser with a traditional corned beef and cabbage luncheon. I had a few folks the first year or two we did the meal who weren’t sure what to think of the meal.
But, after a couple of tries the Irish luncheon is now part of the plan. I would guess this weekend is when the real celebrating will be done if you get into the “Irish spirits.” Don’t forget to wear your green, come Monday.
A week from today is the first official day of spring. I just hope the weather starts to act like spring. The long range forecast doesn’t look that overly “springy” to me. It will be spring break for a lot of folks next week and it looks like a lot of people are headed south for a little more warmth than we have been having.
Most of the trips I have heard of are people headed for either Florida or for some spring baseball action in Arizona.
It looks like the planting season may come a little later this year for our farm friends. I understand there is still more than three feet of frost in the ground.
The price of milk just keeps going up. It seems like our friends in China and Asia have found the thirst for milk. Milk futures on the Chicago Mercantile set a record last month and are up 22 percent for the year.
The average price for a gallon of milk is now more than $3.50 a gallon and not looking to go down anytime soon.
Strange thing is, we are drinking less and less in the United States. Flavored waters, juices and other drinks have taken up some of our milk consumption. The record exports to China and Asia will continue, which is a real plus for the dairymen, but not for the domestic consumer.
The list of the “most content” states came out this week. The Midwest scored well with North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska listed as No. 1, 2 and 3. Iowa came in 10th. The people in the least content states are West Virginia, Kentucky and Mississippi. The sense of well-being is strong in the Midwest.
March Madness is in full swing. The conference championships are being fought out this week with the countdown to the NCAA selections this Sunday night. We should have a number of teams from the area making the “Big Dance” this year. Iowa, Iowa State, Creighton and Nebraska should all be dancing.
You have a chance to win $1 billion this year just by picking all the brackets right from play-in to the championship. Warren Buffet of Berkshire Hathaway and Quicken Loans are putting up a prize of $1 billion if you can pick a perfect bracket. I would take the under on anyone winning the billion dollars!
Your odds are better of finding a live T-Rex somewhere in Iowa.
Our annual Progress edition comes out the week of March 24. Each day that week you will get the pleasure of reading about volunteers from around the area. It is always nice to see what folks are doing in south central Iowa.
The new dorms out at SWCC are starting to take shape. I couldn’t believe those workers were out there all this winter putting the walls together on those “colder than heck” days. They must have a couple of polar bears working for them. I think they are pretty much on schedule as of this point. Good effort!
