Jack Shiflett Afton
Jack E. Shiflett, 86, of Afton died March 12, 2014, at his home.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., Afton. The Rev. Dwayne Henrichs will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery east of Afton. Graveside military rites will be conducted by John B. Parks Post No. 8882 VFW of Afton. Open visitation will be 2 to 7 p.m. Friday with family present 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Jack Eugene Shiflett, son of Carrie Odessa (Doud) and Charlie Andrew Shiflett, was born Sept. 23, 1927, southeast of Afton.
Jack was educated in Afton schools.
Jack served in the United States Navy during World War II from February 1945 to his discharge in July 1946.
In 1948, Jack married Reva Beta.
Jack farmed near Cromwell.
Reva and Jack divorced.
In 1959, Jack married Ramona “Mona” C. Oehlertz in Bedford.
Jack farmed most of his life around Afton, Creston and Mount Ayr. He and Mona co-owned and operated the Long Branch Bar and Grill in Arispe for 10 years. He also worked for East Union Schools and Union County Road Maintenance, until his full retirement.
Jack was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Antique Tractor Pulling Association.
Jack is survived by his sons, Jim (wife Linda) Stewart of Shenandoah, Darrell (wife Norah) Stewart of Woden and David (wife Cathy) Shiflett of Grant City; daughter Sheila (husband David) Stewart of Winterset; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Betty Johnston of Creston and Janice (husband Willard) Fain of Lorimor.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ramona; and sons, Steve Shiflett and Richard Stewart.
