Published: Friday, March 21, 2014 10:51 a.m. CST

Marie Mullin, a fifth grade student at St. Malachy School, will sing alto this weekend in the elementary honor choir of the North Central Region American Choral Directors Association Convention. The choir performs 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Civic Center in Des Moines, under the direction of guest conductor Martha Shaw.

More than 1,500 fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders from Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota and Nebraska auditioned for the choir by means of a recorded audition. Less than 50 singers were chosen.

This is the third honor ensemble Mullin has sung in this year. Last fall she auditioned and was selected for participation in the elementary chorus at the Iowa Opus Honor Choir Festival. Earlier this month, she sang in the Southwest Iowa Choral Directors Elementary Honor Choir.

Mullin is the daughter of Bill Mullin and Julia Weisshaar-Mullin of Creston. Her vocal music teacher is Bonnie Goodson.
