CLARINDA — The Creston girls track team entered Tuesday’s Lady Cardinal Relays here as the two-time defending team champions.

But, the Panthers entered Tuesday’s meet missing 109 points from last year’s meet, including the point-production from junior Natalie Mostek, who missed the meet with illness.

“I added it up on the way over here,” head coach Clay Arnold said. “Last year we ran away with it. There were 109 points from last year’s Clarinda meet that were not participating tonight. We knew it was going to be hard to fill those 109 points.”

Creston finished fourth in the Class 2A team standings with 57 points. Glenwood ran away with the team title with 198 points.

Even though team points were hard to come by, the Panthers came up with several PRs for the night.

Marie Hood recorded a new PR in the shot put, throwing 27-1.5, which was over a foot better than her previous best. Senior Olivia Nielsen recorded yet another PR in the discus, launching a throw of 88-2 — three feet better than her previous PR.

Creston swept the 4x800 relays, winning both the varsity race (10:59.28) and the JV race (11:56.85).

The varsity team consisted of Jami Sickels, Monica Powers, Maria Mostek and Jessica Beatty, while the JV team consisted of Madison Callahan, Rachel Shepherd, Kristy Powers and Angela Drey.

Jami Sickels recorded a new personal best split in the 4x800, running 2:40.61.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Lexie Little, Amber Castillo, Madison Hance and Leah Schuler finished third in 1:16.02, which was a good time for the young group, Arnold said.

Beatty and Monica Powers both ran PRs in the JV 4x200 relay, running 29.53 and 31.14, respectively.

Castillo took fourth place in the 100 hurdles, running 18.28.

Maria Mostek claimed second place in the varsity 800 meters, running 2:34.17, finishing behind Red Oak dual-sport athlete Kate Walker.

Kristy Powers finished second in the JV 800 meters, running a new PR of 2:58.

“Kristy Powers ran a tremendous, very smart race,” Arnold said. “She ran a negative split. She had a great night, running the open 8, the 4x8 and anchored our JV sprint medley.”

The varsity sprint medley relay team of Hood, Sydney Suiter, Josie Sickels and Amber Castillo finished fourth.

The Panthers got two placewinners in the varsity 1,500 meter run. Beatty continued her strong night, finishing fifth in 5:55.09, while Monica Powers took sixth, scoring her first ever varsity individual team point, thanks to her time of 6:00.04.

Arnold’s goal for the team this year was to earn a repeat sweep of the varsity and JV 4x400 relays.

The JV team got things started on the right foot, as the team of Josie Sickels, Hance, Callahan and Rachel Shepherd won in 4:45.06. Josie Sickels ran a PR split of 69.18, while Shepherd ran a PR split of 70.73.

The varsity team of Jami Sickels, Maria Mostek, Chelcee Downing and Raegen Smith appeared to be on its way to completing the sweep, but a botched handoff in the final exchange opened the door for Glenwood to get back in the race and take the victory.

“We ran well, just didn’t quite get the exchange down on that third exchange,” Arnold said.

Creston returns to action Thursday at Red Oak, with events scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
