CLARINDA — Creston junior Jay Wolfe broke a 46-year-old meet record at the Cardinal Relays here Friday, helping to lead the Panthers to a third-place finish in the Class 3A team standings.

Mount Ayr easily won Class 1A, while Southwest Valley finished fifth in Class 2A. Lenox finished 13th in Class 1A.

Wolfe, who had earlier in the night won the Class 3A 400 meter dash in 50.92 seconds, stole the show by running away from the field in the 800 meters, clocking a time of 1:57.92.

That performance broke a record set in 1968 by Jerome Howe of Treynor, who ran 1:58.2.

“That’s a major highlight,” Creston head coach Pat Schlapia said. “When the former record holder goes by the name of Jerome Howe, that’s one of those names if you’re a track person, you just know.

“He was not only a state champion for Treynor, but he’s in the Iowa track hall of fame and was an outstanding runner for Kansas. He was an Olympic alternate in the 1,500 in 1972. When you have a track meet named after you, that’s a very special record Jay was able to break.”

Wolfe’s time currently places him 12th in the state for Drake Relays qualifying. The top 16 in the 800 meters qualify for Drake.

Senior Brandon Phipps won two gold medals for the Panthers, leading a distance double sweep for the Panthers.

Phipps won both the 3,200 meters and the 1,600 meters, while sophomore teammate Cooper McDermott placed second in both events.

Phipps ran 10:08.17 to win the 3,200 and McDermott crossed the line in 10:21.07.

“We didn’t run the 4x8 and we gave those four regulars a chance to run in some other events,” Schlapia said. “Both Brandon and Cooper, it was their race from the get go. That was a good first time for those guys in the 3,200.”

Senior Maxx Walters placed in a pair of individual events, finishing fourth in both the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash. Walter clocked times of 11.64 seconds for the 100 and 23.71 for the 200.

“He was right there in the hunt in that 100 meter dash with the leaders,” Schlapia said. “Since this was the first time he ran it, he wasn’t in the fast heat. That was nice to see him jump all the way to fourth.”

Trevor Luther placed fourth in the discus throw with a toss of 121-7 and sophomore Chris Foster finished fifth in the high jump, clearing 5-4, to give the Panthers points out of the field events.

Creston also placed in the 4x200 relay with the team of Alex Tamerius, Bryce Briley, Foster and Seth Maitlen and in the 4x400 with the team of Briley, Walters, Phipps and Wolfe.

The 4x400 relay took five seconds off its time from Tuesday’s meet at Glenwood.

Schlapia said it was nice to see the kids competing hard all night, even in the JV events.

“It was nice to see our boys go out there and compete,” he said. “It was a good night by all 18 that we had there.”

Creston returns to action Tuesday at Chariton before hosting the Panther Relays on Thursday, on the last night for Drake Relays qualifying.

Raiders roll

Mount Ayr easily picked up the team championship in Class 1A with 138 points, outscoring second-place East Mills with 101 points.

The Raiders won seven events for the night in Class 1A, including junior Joe Ricker taking first place in both the shot put and the discus.

The Mount Ayr 4x800 relay team of Jack Jones, Noah Larsen, Erik Freed and Kyle Dolecheck improved by 10 seconds, running the fifth-fastest time in school history.

Also earning spots in the school’s all-time top five on the performance list were the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.

The Raiders went one and two in the 400 meter dash with senior Jacob Sobotka winning, followed by Rhett Murphy. Grant Staats, running the 110 high hurdles for just the second time in his career, won the event in 16.72 seconds.

Trevor Anderson finished third in the 800 meters, while Lenox’s Jacob Bolinger finished fourth in the event.

“Some of these guys were pretty tired by Friday, however they were able to put together one of the most complete meets we’ve had in a while,” Mount Ayr head coach Brad Elliott said.

Lenox also finished fifth in the 4x100 relay with the team of Josh Mitchell, Dustyn Rauch, Frank Hoffman and Dustin Gordon.

SW Valley fifth

Southwest Valley had a strong showing in the field events, leading the Timberwolves to a fifth-place finish in Class 2A.

Keegan Longabaugh won the discus and finished fourth in the shot put. Colten Drake took second place in both the high jump and the long jump, while teammate Scott Vanderhoof finished third in the high jump.

Trevor Sorensen placed in both the 400 meter dash and the 400 meter hurdles. Lane Peterson finished fifth in the 3,200 meters.

The Timberwolves placed in the shuttle hurdle relay, 4x800 relay, 4x200 relay, distance medley relay and the 4x100 relay.
