Five area events qualify for Drake Relays

DES MOINES — The 2014 Drake Relays will feature five events with area high school athletes or relay teams competing.

Murray senior Kate Patton kicks off area action at the Drake Relays at 8:31 a.m. on Friday with the 100 meter dash prelims.

Patton ended the qualification period in a three-way tie for 31st. The top 32 in the 100 meter dash qualify for the Drake Relays.

But, Patton was selected as one of two representatives from that tie to compete in the Drake Relays.

She will run out of lane eight in heat one on Friday morning. If she makes the finals, she will run at 12:11 p.m. on Friday.

Next up on the blue oval from the CNA coverage area will be Creston junior Jay Wolfe in the 800 meter finals.

Wolfe takes to the track at 1:45 p.m. Friday, wearing hip No. 1. He enters with the 13th fastest time in the state.

The top 16 in the 800 meter run qualify for the Drake Relays.

Hy-Vee Night at the Drake Relays will include the Mount Ayr boys 4x100 relay team and the 4x400 relay team.

Mount Ayr’s 4x100 relay team of Grant Staats, Jacob Sobotka, Erik Freed and Cody Stackhouse runs at 6:10 p.m.

Mount Ayr qualified as the 53rd-fastest team in the state out of the 80 qualifiers. Finals of the 4x100 relay are 3:40 p.m. Saturday.

The Raider quartet of Kyle Dolecheck, Noah Larsen, Freed and Sobotka takes the track at 9:08 p.m. Friday.

Mount Ayr qualified in 19th out of 32 teams. The Raiders run in lane one of heat two in the 4x400.

Joining Mount Ayr in that heat will be Waukee (fastest qualifier), Glenwood (sixth-fastest), Des Moines Lincoln (seventh-fastest), Sioux City Bishop Heelan (12th-fastest), Cedar Rapids Prairie (13th-fastest) and Des Moines Roosevelt (18th-fastest).

Finals of the 4x400 relay are 4:22 p.m. on Saturday.

The final area event at the 2014 Drake Relays will be the Creston boys 4x800 relay team of Bryce Briley, Cooper McDermott, Brandon Phipps and Wolfe.

The high school boys 4x800 relay final is 9:50 a.m. Saturday.

Creston qualified in the 16th and final spot for the Drake Relays.
