IOWA FALLS — The Southwestern softball team missed an opportunity to climb the ICCAC standings with a weekend split at Ellsworth.
Ellsworth sits one game in front of the sixth-place Spartans at 7-11 to Southwestern’s 6-14. A sweep would have pulled the Spartans into fifth place.
Overall, SWCC fell to 14-19 overall while Ellsworth improves to 8-15.
Southwestern won the opener Saturday, 4-3, with a two-run home run by Emma Ferrin in a three-run seventh-inning rally. That gave the win to pitcher Sam Strand, who retired the Panthers in order in the bottom of the seventh.
The sweep was attainable in a 4-3 defeat in game two. Southwestern stranded 12 baserunners in the game as Danielle McIntosh took the loss.
“We had the bases loaded in the seventh and didn’t score,” SWCC coach Lindsay Stumpff said. “We definitely had our chances. McIntosh pitched better than she has in a while. We’re seeing some progress from our pitchers, which is a good sign going into our final eight conference games. Emma Ferrin had a pretty good day at the plate with a couple singles, a double and home run.”
Southwestern hosts William Penn JV today. DMACC, which includes sophomore shortstop Katlin Briley of Creston, visits SWCC for a 3 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday and Iowa Central is here Thursday. On the weekend the Spartans travel north to NIACC and Iowa Lakes in Mason City and Estherville.
