Shiltz 8-0

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — Creston freshman state runner-up Chase Shiltz was 8-0 wrestling for first-place Team Iowa Black in the AAU Freshman-Sophomore Duals last weekend.

Competing at 152 pounds, Shiltz defeated Parker Simington, Colorado’s Class 4A state champion, twice during the tournament by scores of 12-8 and 5-3, and had five victories by fall.

Marlin competes

LAS VEGAS — Iowa freshman Jake Marlin of Creston was 3-2 at 66 kg (145.5 pounds) at the 2014 FILA Junior National Freestyle Tournament over the weekend.

Marlin was defeated by Robbie Mathers of Missouri, 17-6; won 13-3 over Jon Townsend of Sooner Wrestling Club; won 14-8 over unattached Edgar Bright; won 10-0 over Colin Heffernan of Central Michigan; and lost by fall in 2:27 to Luke Zilverberg of Northern Plains. He did not place in the top eight.

Iowa teammate Topher Carton was second at 139 pounds, and Brandon Sorensen was third at 154. Alex Meyer was seventh at 185. The tournament was for young collegians and top high school wrestlers.

At the U.S. Senior Open in Las Vegas, former Iowa national champion Brent Metcalf was champion at 143 pounds and Matt McDonough was fourth at 134. Full results are available online at www.trackwrestling.com.

SWCC splits

Southwestern’s softball team defeated William Penn JV here Monday, 9-6, before losing the second game, 8-6.

Southwestern (15-20) hosts DMACC in conference play Wednesday with the doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. Sophomore shortstop Katilin Briley of Creston is on the DMACC squad.
