Edmund Smith, 91, of Creston, formerly of Afton, died April 21, 2014, at Greater Regional Medical Center.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 24, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. The Rev. Ken Halbur will officiate. Burial will be in St. Edward’s Catholic Cemetery near Afton. Open visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a 7:30 p.m. Christian Wake Service at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25, Creston. Edmund Thomas Smith, son of Anna (Curran), born in Ireland, and Michael Lawrence Smith, was born Feb. 25, 1923, in Lincoln, Neb. He lived for a time in Elm Creek, Neb., before moving to the Afton area, and graduating from Afton High School in 1941. He then studied at a business school in Omaha.

On Jan. 15, 1948, Edmund married Iris Mae Shannon in Afton. They settled and farmed north of Afton for the next 41 years.

In 1989, they moved into Creston.

Ed was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church of Creston, Creston Eagles Club No. 1398 and was a part of the Hy-Vee afternoon coffee club.

Edmund is survived by his wife Iris Smith of Creston; daughters, Kristine (husband Raymond) Clark of Creston and Theresa (husband Steve) Snyder of Adel; sons, Willie (wife Kathy) Smith and Gary Smith, all of Afton; grandchildren, Nancy (John) Connelly, April Clark (Josh Whetzell), Shannon (Jason) Doege, Lindsey (Lance) Millsap, Wade Snyder (Julie Morris), Jennifer (Andy) Jackson, Jessica (Clinton) Haight and Samantha and Shelby Smith; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sister-in-law Pat Smith of Afton and several nieces, nephews and other family.

Edmund was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Owen, Gerald and Mike; and sister Anna Ford.
