Creston/O-M's Jenna Taylor hits a forehand shot during an 8-6 victory at No. 2 singles in the Panthers' 7-2 dual victory over Clarinda.

Creston/O-M and Clarinda split a pair of 7-2 tennis dual victories Monday.

The Cardinals won the boys action at home, and the Panther girls opened their home season by winning seven of nine matches.

Creston/O-M assistant coach Amanda Plymale was pleased with the Panthers’ turnaround from their 2013 encounter with Clarinda.

“Our team was a little intimidated to face Clarinda as we went 0-9 with them last year,” Plymale said. “Tonight’s turnout shows how strong our team is this year. After singles we only had to clinch one doubles and we ended up sweeping the doubles again!”

Battling their opponent and a strong wind at the SWCC courts, Creston/O-M’s Audrey Fyock, Jenna Taylor, Ashley Harris and Caitlin McIlravy won singles matches before the Panthers swept all three doubles matches.

At Clarinda, No. 1 singles player Garret Taylor cruised to a 10-1 victory. The only other Panther win was by Ryan Kucera at No. 3 singles, 10-7.

“It was nice to get a meet in today after having our only meet last week rained out,” coach Kevin Cooper said. “I saw some improvement in some areas, but we are still too inconsistent. Garret Taylor played a nice match at number one singles and it was great for Ryan Kucera to get his first varsity singles win.”

On Thursday the boys travel to Audubon and the Creston/O-M girls host the Wheelers.
