Clair Goos Afton

Clair Goos, 84, of Afton, Iowa died April 29, 2014 at the Afton Care Center.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at the Peace United Church of Christ in Gladbrook, Ia officiated by Rev Robert Doner. A luncheon will be served with burial following at the Maple Hill Cemetery, in Gladbrook. Open visitation will be Friday, May 2, 2014 at the Powers Funeral Home in Afton, from 2 – 7:30 with family receiving friends from 5:30 until 7:30. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Afton Community Building and the Afton Methodist Church. Online condolences can be given at www.powersfh.com.

Clair Alva Goos, son of Georgianna (Witt) and Gus Goos, was born January 5, 1930 in rural Beaman, Ia.

Clair graduated from Beaman High School in 1947. He worked for Gethmann Construction and Klinefelter Bean Mill in Gladbrook.

On December 27, 1950, Clair married Marcella Joyce Wrage in Gladbrook, Iowa. After Clair’s service in the U.S. Air Force (1950 – 1954) they settled in Gladbrook.

Clair’s passion was working in the seed corn industry. He was the Production Manager for Lynks Hybrid Marshalltown, Ia from 1959 – 1976. From there Clair continued his seed corn career working in Brazil, Florida, Pella, Ia, owning his own company in Grinnell, Ia, Lone Tree, Ia, South America and retiring from Norvartis of Eldora, Ia in 1996. After retirement, Clair moved to Afton, Ia and continued to work summers in Indiana with seed corn production.

Clair was a member of the Afton United Methodist Church, Gladbrook American Legion and served on the Fairview Manor Board in Afton.

Survivors include his wife Marcella Goos; son, Kirby (Shirley)Goos; daughter, Michelle “Shelley” (Randy) Hardisty all of Afton; brother George (Pat) Goos of Gladbrook, Ia.; sister Alice Denver, Colo.; sister-in-laws Esther Goos and Fuzzy Goos both of Gladbrook, Ia. MaryLee Goos, Narragansett, RI and Pearl Goos of Waterloo, Ia.; five grandchildren, Heather (Gary) VanderHeiden, Knoxville, Ia.; Dustyn (Molly) Goos Menninga, Des Moines; LaCosta (Jeremy) VanDyk, Pella, Ia.; Drew (Suzy) Hardisty, Afton; Taylor (fiancé Alex Pettit)Hardisty, Des Moines, Ia.; nine great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and eight step-great grandchildren.

Clair was preceded in death by his parents, parents in-laws, six brothers, Evan, Fred, Irwin “PeeWee”, Roger, Wyllis “Bud” and Vernon Goos, sister in-laws Dorothy and Marge and brother in-law Worth Conder.
