Red Oak sweeps 8-1 duals over Panthers

Published: Tuesday, May 6, 2014 1:33 a.m. CST

Red Oak tennis looks to be strong again in 2014.

The Tiger girls improved to 7-0 for the season and 6-0 in Hawkeye 10 duals with an 8-1 victory over Creston/O-M here Monday. The Red Oak boys posted the same score over the Panthers in Red Oak.

Creston girls are now 4-2 overall, 3-2 in Hawkeye 10 play, while the boys fall to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in league matches.

Caitlin McIlravy at No. 6 singles gained the lone victory in the girls dual, while Chantz Davidson won a 10-8 super tiebreaker to claim victory at No. 2 boys singles for the Panthers.

“The girls had positive attitudes tonight facing a tough opponent,” said Creston assistant coach Amanda Plymale. “Our final match scores did not reflect all of the close games we had. Audrey Fyock had many deuce points in multiple games, however it always turned in the opponents’ favor. Caitlin McIlravy scored our only point of the night with strong serves and consistent shots.”

The Panther girls face Chariton at home today.

In the boys meet, Red Oak veteran Jordan Nelson topped Garret Taylor 6-4, 6-2 in a competitive No. 1 singles match. Davidson then got past Red Oak’s Hayden Berry 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 (super tiebreaker).

Ryan Kucera nearly pulled off the same outcome against Weston Rolenc at No. 3 singles, falling 10-7 after both of them had won a set. Seth Maitlen dropped a 10-4 tiebreaker set at No. 6 singles and teamed with Triston Davidson for a close 10-8 defeat at No. 3 doubles.

“Tonight was a good experience for our younger kids, because we were able to play best of three sets in singles,” Creston/O-M coach Kevin Cooper said. “We had numerous matches that we competed in until the end. We have to close out those matches to be successful.”

The Panther boys are at Chariton today.
