Spartan sports shooters end season with tourney win

The Southwestern Community College sports shooting team took top honors earning High Overall Team at the Iowa Collegiate Invitational on April 26, and April 27, at the Izaak Walton League in Ames and Nevada.

College teams participating in the shoot included Iowa State University, North Iowa Area Community College, Simpson College, and Southwestern Community College.

Ethan Jolliff, SWCC freshman from Indianola, won High Overall Individual for the tournament. In singles trap, Jolliff took first hitting 48 of 50 targets. He won skeet as well, hitting 43 of 50. Trenton Cheers, SWCC freshman from Indianola, won sporting clays with 72 of 100.

During competition, the SWCC team consisted of 15 sports shooters, divided into three squads.

SWCC’s Blue Squad was made up of Cheers; Chisum Downing, freshman from Creston; Heath Evans, freshman from Diagonal; Jolliff; and Colton Offield, sophomore from New Virginia.

The SWCC Red Squad consisted of Jordan Brand, freshman from Indianola; Billy Ellis, sophomore from Weldon; Morgan Knorr, sophomore from Savannah, Mo.; Chase McDonald, sophomore from Chariton; and Matt Mitchell, freshman from Indianola.

SWCC’s White Squad included Justin Brant, freshman from Glidden; Cami Feehan, freshman from Albia; Katie Fuller, freshman from Osceola; Katie Konsitzke, sophomore from Chariton; and Amanda Spencer, freshman from Bedford.

Charlie Mundy, SWCC head sports shooting coach, felt the team wasn’t shooting at 100 percent during the weekend tourney. But fortunately for the Spartans, Mundy said most of the field shot worse than they did. The Spartans fought adverse weather conditions as well, with strong winds on Saturday and rain on Sunday.

Any way around it, Mundy was happy his team earned the victory.

“It was great to end the season with this tourney win,” Mundy explained. “These athletes worked hard all year and it paid off. I couldn’t be happier with this team in our first year of competition. We set the bar high and I can’t wait to get back to work in the fall.”

This is the first year the SWCC Spartans have fielded a sports shooting team. The Spartans team travels to shooting events, competing against teams from across the Midwest and the country. The team is open to men and women. The college’s sports shooting team holds practices at the High Lakes Outdoor Alliance in Afton.
