Relentless Rams finish 10-0 victory early
The Glenwood girls put on a dominant performance at a frigid Panther Field Thursday night.
With the benefit of a brisk northwest wind in the first half, as temperatures dipped into the mid-40s, the Rams built a 6-0 lead at halftime, controlling the ball on their scoring end nearly the entire 40 minutes.
Creston gained more possessions and got off some shot attempts after halftime, but the Rams were able to finish it on the mercy rule when Sydney Stivers made it 10-0 with 7:26 remaining.
The busiest Panther on the field was senior goalkeeper Sadie Jones, who made 38 saves against a relentless Glenwood attack that fired 58 shots, including 49 on goal.
Creston managed four shots, two on goal by Savannah Hartman and Shelby Palser.
At times this year Jones has played on the field, injecting some speed into the midfield range, with sophomore Becca Ross in the net. Coach Kim Lauffer said Jones’ experience was needed in goal against a polished offense like Glenwood’s.
“Sadie was working hard, and our back end got tired,” Lauffer said. “Against a team like that we decided to have Sadie on the back end. I wasn’t sure the extra speed on the field with her was really going to help us as much as keeping the other team down a little bit.”
While Glenwood goalkeepers Anastasia Frazee and Rileigh Spahn had no action in the first half, Creston was able to construct some runs to the scoring area after halftime. It was an evenly played match from the 26:06 mark to the 9:34 stage when Stivers ended it.
“There were a few times when we were tired on our feet,” Lauffer said, “but honestly, against a team like Glenwood, I was pleased with the way we played for the most part. In terms of 50-50 balls, we held pretty strongly in the second half.”
Glenwood improved to 6-6 overall and 3-2 in Hawkeye 10 play. Creston, now 0-7 in the league and 1-12 overall, hosts Class 2A 15th-ranked Winterset (9-2) in another challenging match Tuesday.
Glenwood won the JV match, 7-0. The Rams had 31 shots, including 26 on goal. Creston had one shot on goal by Corissa Kinkade. Becca Ross had 15 saves and Livi Hartman had nine saves.
