Rams score in seventh to sink Panthers

GLENWOOD — The seventh-ranked Glenwood baseball team topped Creston 2-1 Monday night on Brady Wheeler’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh.

Creston freshman Chase Shiltz and Ram junior Dru Little were locked in pitching duel most of the night, with Wheeler relieving Little by striking out the side in the top of the seventh. Little and Wheeler combined for 10 strikeouts.

Shiltz wasn’t getting as many strikeouts, but he was effective in allowing only two hits until the Rams bunched a pair of hits in the seventh.

With one out, the bottom two in the Ram batting order walked and singled. With runners on first and second, Wheeler hit a single to right field, and the lead runner scored as the ball slipped past the Panther outfielder trying to make a quick play.

Glenwood opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, and Creston answered in the fifth. With two outs, Conner Pals reached base on an error by the shortstop. Then Cole Crawford, Trevor Luther and Nathan Haley drew walks to score the tying run.

Crawford’s single in the third inning was Creston’s only hit.

“We had 10 strikeouts and looked at too many good pitches,” Creston coach Steve Birchard said. “Shiltz did a nice job on the mound. He was around the zone and deserved to win. We just didn’t hit the ball.”

Glenwood improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Hawkeye 10, having opened league play with a 17-7 loss to Council Bluffs St. Albert. Creston, 1-2 and 0-1 in the league, hosts Clarinda today before a home doubleheader against third-ranked Harlan on Thursday.

Glenwood sailed 17-3 in the JV contest Monday. Coach Ben Landers said most of the runs were unearned, as starting pitcher Jaden Driskell suffered from inconsistent defensive support. Brenden McDowell pitched the final 1/3 of an inning and yielded five runs.

“Our pitching really wasn’t bad, we just had poor defense,” Landers said.

Cody Crawford led the Panthers (2-1) at the plate by going 2-of-3 with a double and two RBIs. Brody Frain also had a hit and Gavin Woods scored on a passed ball.
