Kinnick’s Heisman, Herky visit Adel Saturday

ADEL — The city of Adel and Adel Historical Museum have announced a special viewing of Nile Kinnick Jr.’s 1939 Heistman Trophy on Saturday.

The viewing will be from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the Adel Public Library, 303 S. 10th Street. Special guest Herky the Hawk will also be present to interact and take photos with attendees.

This event will help drive support and raise funds for a new museum addition honoring former and longtime Adel citizens Nile Kinnick Jr. and his grandfather, Gov. George Washington Clarke.

Kinnick’s Heisman Trophy represents the culmination of his many athletic accomplishments, which supplemented his numerous achievements outside the sport such as writing,m public speaking and civic involvement. Kinnick is the only Heisman recipient for a school in the state of Iowa.

The trophy is is on temporary loan from the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame and Museum.

A new addition to the Adel museum will provide space to enhance educational endeavors and display the many Kinnick artifacts. Each $20 viewing fee (or $50 maximum per family) will go directly to the Kinnick Museum.

A grilled lunch special and a day pass to the Adel Family Aquatic Center will be included in the viewing fee. All paying visitors will automatically be entered into a drawing for a Dallas Clark autographed jersey and other autographed sports memorabilia.

Other community events Saturday include a traveling war memorial, a varsity softball tournament, a poker run, a bags tournament and performances by a military veteran band.
