Tomorrow is Friday the 13th — always a good day for those Friday the 13th sales. I don’t believe in the bad luck part of the day. I have just as good/bad luck on Friday the 13th as I do any other day. It is the only Friday the 13th we have in 2014.
Friday is also the start of this weekend’s big citywide garage sale weekend here in Creston. The event always brings a lot of people to town looking to snatch up some good bargains from “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure” department.
Saturday is Flag Day. With several ceremony’s going on around the area, the local Elks Lodge will have one Saturday evening.
Saturday night is also Creston/southwest Iowa night at the Iowa Barnstormers game in Des Moines. About 250 area folks will be attending the game and tailgate. The Creston High School dance group “The Peppers” will be performing between the first and second quarter of the game.
We will also have the honorable mayor of Creston (Warren Woods) participating in the pork chop toss and Mitchell Graham representing our area in the pie-eating contest. It should be a fun evening for all.
This Sunday is Father’s Day. It’s a great time to say “thanks” to your dear ol dad for the wonderful things he has done for you over the years. It is always a great day to barbecue or have a nice meal for dad. Most dad’s are not that “picky” about gifts for Father’s Day. I can never think of anything for my sons to get me. Like most dads, I have everything I want or need. Spending time with the family is still the best thing I could get!
Creston Relay for Life is coming up Friday, June 20. The event always has a good turn out. Hopefully the weather will hold out. It is tough to light those luminaries if it is raining!
The Party in the Park at McKinley Park is Saturday, June 21. There will be three great tribute bands this year. If you like the Eagles, Heart and Journey you are in for a great night.
I would guess those groups have had 50 or more hit singles over the years. All the good rains we have had recently have made the park a nice place to be with the grass and foliage really hitting their early summer peak.
Tickets for the evening are only $15 and can be bought at the Creston News Advertiser office. It’s a good deal for about six hours of music.
I had a chance over Memorial weekend to go visit some friends in Arizona. You could see how dry it was from the air on my way into Phoenix. I went up north of Phoenix to visit some trout streams that I frequent. But, the usual streams were down to just a trickle.
I’ve been going there for more than 30 years and I’ve never seen it this dry. I had dinner with some friends one night at a small Italian bistro, and in strolls former Supreme Court Chief Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and sits down about four feet from where I’m having dinner. That’s never happened to me in Creston!
If that area of the country doesn’t get some rain pretty soon, that whole place is going to be a tender box.
