Panthers salvage baseball split at Kuemper
CARROLL — Creston held off Carroll Kuemper Catholic twice after building leads to salvage a Hawkeye 10 Conference split with the Knights Thursday night at Carroll Stadium.
The Panthers won the nightcap, 13-10, after Kuemper won game one 4-3 on a walkoff double with a runner on first in the bottom of the seventh.
Cole Crawford and Brandon Phipps pitched complete games for the Panthers.
Phipps battled through a 120-pitch effort in the nightcap victory, allowing six earned runs and eight hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
"Brandon was getting ahead of guys but they were getting some hits on 0-2 and 1-2 counts," said Creston coach Steve Birchard. "We kicked it around a little bit with four errors, so that didn't help him. We never relinquished the lead after getting out in front 5-0 in the first two innings. We're hitting the ball with 13 hits in that game and 12 in the first game."
Leadoff batter Conner Pals was 3-of-4 in the second game. Trevor Luther, batting over .500 entering the night, was 3-5 with a triple and two RBI. Nate Haley hit two doubles and drove in two runs. Two freshmen, Chase Shiltz and Kadon Hulett, also drove in two runs each.
Trailing 5-0, Kuemper closed it to 5-3 in the bottom of the second, and tied it 5-5 in the third.
The Panthers answered with two-run hits by Shiltz and Hulett in the fourth to go back in front 9-5. Haley's deep RBI hit in the fifth made it 10-5.
But the Knights rallied again with five hits and four runs in the fifth, cutting it to 10-9. In the Panther sixth, Garret Taylor scored on a wild pitch and Luther's two-run triple made it 13-9.
Phipps encountered a rough spell early in the seventh as Kuemper shaved it to 13-10 with two runners on and the tying run in the batter's box. But Crawford caught a flyball for the final out.
"That's a big outfield there and there's a lot of field to cover," Birchard said. "Cole was definitely busy out there."
The opener was a heartbreaker for the Panthers, much like the seventh-inning loss in game two against Harlan last week.
Creston rallied to tie the game 3-3 with a run in the fifth, and it stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh.
Crawford hit the first batter, and Joe Mohr hit a double into the gap for the winning RBI.
Crawford yielded four earned runs on eight hits with one walk, one hit batter and four strikeouts.
"Cole always gives us a good outing," Birchard said. "He's reliable on the mound and deserved to win. We had some hitting, just not quite as many with runners on as we did in the second game."
Shiltz gets the starting assignment tonight in a home game against Atlantic after the 5:30 p.m. JV contest. Atlantic beat Harlan 9-5 last week and topped Shenandoah Thursday, 8-3, to improve to 6-1 in conference play, trailing only Denison-Schleswig (5-0.) The Trojans are 8-1 overall. Creston is 3-3 in the league and 4-5 overall.
In other games Thursday, Lewis Central defeated Glenwood 4-1, Harlan shut out Clarinda 8-0 and St. Albert topped Red Oak 9-2.
