LeRoy Merritt, 70, of Afton died June 17, 2014, at Afton Care Center.

Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., Afton. The Rev. Jim Morris will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Creston.Visitation with family present will be 1 to 2:30 p.m. service time Tuesday at the fuenral home. Memorials are to be determined. LeRoy Jonas Merritt, son of Edna Viola (Priest) and Jonas Franklin Merritt, was born Jan. 26, 1944, in Arispe.

LeRoy graduated from Arispe High School in 1962.

LeRoy worked as a farmhand for his father in the Creston area until moving to Des Moines, where he worked as a baker for Hy-Vee, Albertsons, Easter Foods and Dahls in several different locations. He then moved to Des Moines and worked for Kirkwood Hotel as a baker and also the farmers’ market. LeRoy was a girls softball coach and umpire in Bondurant.

LeRoy is survived by his son Jonas Merritt of Des Moines and many nieces and nephews.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Christina Merritt, son Darin Merritt; and sisters, Loretta Hunemuller and Shirley Stroud.
