National junior high rodeo underway in Des Moines

DES MOINES — More than 1,100 junior high students are competing this week in the National Junior High Finals Rodeo Championships.

The events include barrel racing, goat tying, team roping and junior bull riding. More than 20 Iowans are competing with up to 50,000 spectators expected at the Richard O. Jacobson Exhibition Center and the Pioneer Livestock Pavilion at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

This is the first time the event has been held in Des Moines. It continues with competition at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily through Saturday. National champions will be crowned at the 7 p.m. Saturday show. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for children 5 to 12, and free for 4 and under.

Also, the Western Trade Show will continue 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Saturday at the Bruce L. Rastetter 4-H Exhibits Building and the John Deere Agriculture Building. Cost is free.

Dallen McIntire of Thayer is among the first-round leaders.
