MARTENSDALE — Class 1A fifth-ranked Martensdale St. Marys had 10 hits and took advantage of four Nodaway Valley errors and 11 bases on balls in a 15-5 victory Friday night.

The Blue Devils broke open the game with eight runs in the fifth inning. Vicki Kordick hit a double and single and drove in two runs for Martensdale-St. Marys. Kaitlyn Schad also doubled. Riley Coates, Riley Verwers and Kordick each had two RBI.

Josie Carter hit her second home run of the season in the fourth inning. Paige McElfish and Rachel Hight each had two hits for Nodaway Valley, and Josie Carter drove in a run.

McElfish took the loss, allowing 10 hits and 11 walks with five strikeouts. Verwers was the winner, yielding six hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

“It was a 5-4 ballgame into the bottom of the fifth when Paige had a little trouble finding the plate,” NV coach Ray Stewart said. “She walked four and gave up four hits and we picked up one more run on the night.”
