ORIENT — CAM’s nine-run first inning proved too much to overcome in a 17-7 Cougar victory over Orient-Macksburg here Tuesday night.
CAM, now 8-10, sent 14 batters to the plate in the top of the first against O-M starter Dylan Nichols. The long inning included six CAM hits, two O-M errors, two walks and two batters hit by pitches.
It looked like coach Tyler Peterson’s Bulldogs might respond enough to make it competitive, closing it to 10-5 in the second inning.
Keaton Eslinger hit one of his two RBI doubles and first baseman Chantz Davidson added an RBI double in the second inning. In the third, Eslinger added another run-scoring double and Nichols ripped a run-scoring single down the left field line.
In the third inning, however, CAM unleashed another rally. After two runs on wild pitches and No. 9 batter Thomas Hensley was hit by a pitch, Davidson was brought in to pitch with the Bulldogs trailing 14-5.
Three more runs charged to Nichols crossed the plate. But, Davidson, honored as a five-year Bulldog player during senior night recognition before the game, completed 2 2/3 shutout innings with no hits allowed, two strikeouts and just one walk.
But the damage had been done, and the Bulldogs (6-9) couldn’t mount another comeback against CAM lefty Trace Ticknor. Eslinger got his third hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth, but he was the only baserunner as the game ended on the 10-run rule.
The Bulldogs host Murray today in conference play.
