Panthers pad lead late in 12-3 win

RED OAK — Creston broke open a 6-3 game with six runs in the top of the seventh inning in defeating the Red Oak baseball team Tuesday night, 12-3.

Chase Shiltz struck out 11 Tiger batters in pitching a three-hit victory.

An early 5-0 lead shrank to 5-3 in the fourth inning. The Panthers made it 6-3 in the fifth. Then came the explosion.

“Two guys were hit by pitches, then Kadon Hulett singled to load the bases with one out,” coach Steve Birchard said. “Conner Pals cleared the bases with a triple. Then Cole Crawford hit a flyball to center that was missed. Nate Haley doubled and Shiltz hit a single, so we kept scoring.”

Creston improved to 10-9 overall and 8-7 in the Hawkeye 10. Red Oak, suffering from four errors in the first two innings and seven in the game, fell to 1-15 overall and 0-14 in league play.

The Panthers had more than enough offense. Hulett finished with four hits, including two doubles. Shiltz had a double and two singles to drive in three runs. Pals had three RBI on his triple and also hit a single.

The Panthers travel to Atlantic Thursday with Brandon Phipps getting the starting pitching assignment. Creston hosts St. Albert Monday to make up a suspended game that was halted in fifth inning by inclement weather last week. That game will resume at 3 p.m.

Other Hawkeye 10 scores Tuesday included Harlan 5, St. Albert 4; and Lewis Central 5, Atlantic 0. Others were not available at press time.

Junior varsity

The Creston junior varsity made the most of its one hit by Kolby Tomas.

Thanks to 11 bases on balls and three Red Oak errors, the Panther JV won 4-3 in six innings. Cody Crawford was the winning pitcher with six hits allowed, five walks and five strikeouts.

“We scored our runs on passed balls,” coach Ben Landers said. “They were walking us a lot, and we were lunging at the plate and grounding out a lot. Crawford pitched pretty well. We didn’t hit great, but a win’s a win.”

Creston (8-5) plays at Atlantic Thursday. The Panthers won the first meeting on a walk-off hit by Crawford.
