July is county fair month here in Iowa. It also seems to be prime time for vacations. The local county fairs are always a good time. I know I’ll be out at the Union County Fair flipping pancakes the morning of July 24.
The free breakfast is a good time to see a lot of folks that I only run into once in a while. The celebrity beef show at the Union County Fair will feature Bailey Poolman from the CNA this year in the competition. Get out and support your local county fair. There is always plenty to do at the event.
The Iowa State Fair is now selling its advanced tickets to the big August event. You get your tickets at a discount if you purchase them now. You can buy them online or at a Fareway or Hy-Vee grocery store. They are $8 in advance.
The Creston Shooters did a great job as usual in shooting off the Creston Fourth of July fireworks. The summer rains and the parks department did a wonderful job of getting the park ready for all the folks who came by to take in the festivities.
I also got a report from the parks department that people did an excellent job of picking up after themselves and did not leave behind much of any litter in the park after the event.
It’s good to hear that people do stop and pick up after they have been out and about. Even the restrooms were in good shape after hundreds of people making use of the facilities. Good job everyone.
The annual McKinley Park Festival will take place Saturday, July 26. The kids fishing contest and all the other kid related events will take place starting at 4 p.m. that day. This year the kid’s movie will be replaced with a nice fireworks show over McKinley Lake.
It’s a good deal — two fireworks shows in one month! Everything from a skateboard contest to the Bill Riley talent contest will take place. Plus just $5 gets you a nice hog roast dinner. Mark it down.
I haven’t seen any local sweet corn for sale yet around the area. But, I have to believe that we are only a day or two away from having our first taste of Iowa sweet corn this year. With all the rain, the early reports from those that have tasted the “golden ears” say it is wonderful.
I have my 40th high school reunion this next week. It is always fun to see folks from around the country that you haven’t seen for many moons! We had 498 kids in my graduating class from Lincoln Southeast.
The reunion takes place over four days with several festivities each day. I still keep up with the old school due the fact my brother teaches there. I always have fun catching up with some of my old classmates. We have everything from a monk to a big oil executive in our class, plus everything in between.
I see Crestmoor Golf Course has a new ball machine on the driving range. It is open to the public. You need to buy your $4 token at the club house to get a bucket of balls. It is one of the few driving ranges around. So if you need a little practice or just want to have fun hitting a bucket of balls, give it a try.
Thought for the week: “We’re so busy watching out for what’s just ahead of us, that we don’t take time to enjoy where we are.” — Bill Waterston, cartoonist
