The library belongs to the community

I cannot begin to express my dismay at the idea of moving the library to Lincoln. I do not understand how a small group of people can make this decision for the entire community without taking the popular opinion into account. I would say 9 out of 10 people I talk to are NOT in favor of moving the library and changing the name. WHY can the money not be used to add on to the current building and make that into the Matilda J. Gibson Memorial Library and Cultural Center?

The Lincoln School building was not appropriate to be a school any longer, how is it now going to be perfect to be a library? With any old building you run into unexpected expenses in renovation. I understand the board feels like they will get enough in grants to do the renovation, but at some point a larger “cultural center” is going to need more staff, electricity, upkeep, etc. Are they saying they never will need to ask for more money from the taxpayers?

The library belongs to everyone in the community. EVERYONE. I think that you should listen to what everyone has to say about the move. I know that I was interviewed twice by the fundraiser from Omaha. Not one word I said was even heard. How do I know this? After expressing my absolute NON-support for this idea, he came back to me and said “your name has been mentioned as someone who would be a good spokesperson for the move”... really? I AM NOT IN FAVOR OF THE MOVE. Are you listening to the MANY, MANY citizens who have told you that? Or are those of you in office more interested in the “legacy” you leave behind when you leave office.
