Clara Huff Mitchell

Clara Huff Mitchell, 93, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at Living Center South at Geneva where she had resided for the past 5 1/2 years.

Mrs. Mitchell was born in Sempronius on Huff Rd. which is now Mitchell Rd to Florence Nettleton Huff and Charles Huff. She lived there for 82 years.

Clara graduated from Moravia Central School class of 1938. She went on to Albany School of Nursing where she obtained her LPN.

She married Charles Mitchell of Scipioville, NY and they ran a successful dairy farm on Mitchell Rd. raising a herd of Holstein cows for thirty years, then built a new home down the road and lived there for 30 years. After her husband’s death she moved to Mill Stream Court in Moravia.

Clara was best known in the Sempronius/Moravia area for writing her column NONE SUCH for the Moravia Republican Register. She wrote this column about 50 years. She was very community minded serving on the Moravia Board of Education for 12 years, Historian for Sempronius for 50 years, Republican Committee Person for Sempronius for 50 years. She loved her Republican party. She was a member of Moravia Grange for over 75 years. She was also active in PTA, 4-H, Lake Como Senior Citizens, serving as treasurer. In her spare time she worked at Maxwell Nursing Home in Moravia for 15 years and then went to Howd Nursing for another 20 years.

Clara enjoyed serving in the Sempronius Baptist church singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, and helping with the youth groups for over 50 years. She also served as the Church Clerk for Sempronius Baptist Church and the Dresserville Baptist Church for many years.

She enjoyed reading, embroidering and baking. Her children, nieces and nephews remember her sweet rolls especially.

She is survived by her three children Barbara (Dave) Thorsen of Cayuga, Charles Keith (Enid) Mitchell of Dansville and Virginia (Jim) Knapp of Prescott, IA. Grandchildren Charles (Tami) Thorsen of Rock Hill, SC, Kristine (Brian) Sennett of Lynchburg, VA, Philip Thorsen (fiancée Marcia Groover) of Robinson, IL, Heather (Karthic) Anumalasetty of Dansville, Scott Mitchell, Avon, Anna (Caleb) Hastings, Wichita, KS, Emily (Juern) Akkermann, Prescott, IA great- granddaughter Amanda (Henry) O’Neal, Wayland, Austin and Caris Thorsen, Ashley and Kyle Sennett, Ellie & Annika Akkermann, Mabry, Ty, Kara Hastings. Brother-in-law Bradley Mitchell of Aurora and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents Clara was predeceased by her beloved husband Charles Mitchell, brothers Willard and Warren Huff, sister-in-laws Helen and Cornelia Bradley Huff, Helen Anna Jordan, Eunice Hicks Miller, Betty Mitchell, brother-in-laws Wilson Mitchell, Leonard Jordan, Wilbur Hicks and Grant Miller.

The family wants to thank all of her caregivers on the second floor of Living Center South in Geneva, NY for their understanding, patience and love they gave mom during her stay with them.

Visitation hours with family will be from 10:00-11:30 July 19, 2014 at Second Baptist Church, 1 N. Herman Ave., Auburn, NY. The memorial service will start at 11:30 with the Rev. Jim Main. The Shakelton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
