Underwood hangs on to defeat Western Iowa Conference rival Logan-Magnolia

AVOCA — Underwood jumped ahead early and held on to outlast Logan-Magnolia, 7-6, in the Class 1A District 16 final at AHST High School Saturday night.

Underwood (22-7) moves on to a substate final for the second straight season, needing a victory over Lenox Tuesday at Glenwood to earn the school’s first state tournament appearance.

Underwood took a 7-3 lead in the fourth inning Saturday. Logan-Magnolia (24-9) made a steady comeback, scoring at least once in the second through the sixth innings. Underwood errors allowed the Panthers to score i the third and fourth innings.

Sam Warden (7-0) got the win with relief from Austin Konsor in the sixth inning. Underwood was outhit 8-5 and had four errors to two by the Panthers. But Logan-Magnolia pitchers issued seven walks and hit two batters to go along with the two errors.

Konsor set down the Panthers in order in the top of the seventh to seal the district title.
