Richard Johnson Afton

Richard Johnson, 77, of Afton died Aug. 4, 2014, at Afton Care Center.

Celebration of life services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., Afton. The Rev. Jim Morris will officiate. Burial will be in Vandalia Cemetery near Prairie City. Visitation with family present will be 10 to 11 a.m. service time Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Afton C.A.R.E. Richard Dale Johnson, son of Velma Opal (Smith) and Ralph Johnson, was born May 23, 1937, in Des Moines.

Richard grew up in the Montgomery County area. Over the years, he lived in Malvern, Red Oak, Hamburg, Shenandoah, Shellsburg and Winterset, and moved to Afton in 2000.

Richard worked as a production worker with Innovative Industries in Winterset, Creston and Mount Ayr. He retired in 2009.

Richard is survived by his stepmother Edna Johnson of Afton; brother Max Johnson of Afton; cousin Dorotha (husband Bob) Trostle of Des Moines; aunt Betty Smith of Silver Springs, Md., and numerous other cousins.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ernest in 1956; sisters, Audrey Ruckman Baker and Lenore Little and aunt Illo Fredregill.
