ATLANTIC — Chris Nelson shot a first-round 6-under-par 63 and held on to win the 54th annual Tournament of Champions on his home course here Sunday.
Nelson followed with rounds of 69 and 72 to finish at 3-under 204 to win the 54-hole event hosted each year by the Atlantic Golf and Country Club.
The field includes local club champions from around the state and individuals ranking in the top 25 amateur players in Iowa.
Taking second was Barry Smith of Pine Knolls Country Club, finishing at even par with rounds of 69-71-67 — 207.
Walter Adams of Osceola Country Club placed 24th at 75-77-74 — 226 (+19).
Eric Brown of Mount Ayr Country Club was 36th at 84-78-82 — 244 (+37), two strokes in front of Osceola’s Luke Fry.
Rick Carter of Crestmoor Golf Club tied for seventh in the Senior Division at 74-74-75 — 223 (+16). Alan Adkisson of Lenox Golf Club was 19th at 84-83-88 — 255 (+48).
Senior Division winner was Gene Capps of Indianola Country Club, winning a playoff with past champion Rick Thompson after both shot 7-over 214.
Keith Moore of Crestmoor Golf Club finished fourth in the Super Senior Division at 81-76-81 — 238 (+31). Taking seventh was Donald Perrin of Happy Hollow Country Club at 84-89-83 — 256 (+49).
Frank Gunsolley of Mount Ayr Golf and Country Club in the Super Seniors Division and Kolby Beemer in the Championship Division were also entered in the event, but withdrew after two rounds.
