All-star series

IOWA CITY — The small schools west team won two games and finished second in the 38th annual all-star baseball series played on Thursday through Sunday at Duane Banks Stadium on the University of Iowa campus.

Underwood head coach Andy VanFossan coached the team in the event organized by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association.

The small schools west squad fell in Sunday’s final to the large schools west team 2-0. Cody Selig of Sergeant Bluff-Luton was the losing pitcher. Nate Gettys of Harlan and Brett Greenwood of Logan-Magnolia had a hit each off WDM Valley’s Nick Nelson.

The small schools west squad lost its opener on Thursday to the large schools west team 6-1. Treynor’s Nick Paulsen threw three innings in the loss. Gettys was 2-for-4 with a run scored while Greenwood added a hit.

The small schools west team came back with a win on Friday 5-3 in nine innings over large schools east. Greenwood had two hits while Gettys added one with a run scored.

The small schools west team needed nine innings to win on Saturday as well, defeating the small school east 8-7 to advance to Sunday’s championship game.

Shenandoah’s Jackson Baker had three hits and a stolen base while Gettys added two hits, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Underwood’s Preston Jager was 0-3 with a fielder’s choice.

Gettys was selected as team MVP.

Treynor’s Bob Mantell and Jon Fitzpatrick of Martensdale-St. Marys assisted VanFossan on the team.
