Afterschool

program

The Southern Prairie YMCA offers an afterschool program that serves school-aged children with a variety of programs and activities to explore and develop interests and talents.

The program, located at the First Christian Church, is tax deductible and offers licensed childcare.

Questions can be directed to Youth Programs Coordinator Kelley Malone. Registration is open at the Southern Prairie YMCA. The program starts on the first day of school, Aug. 20.

5K run and walk

The Southern Prairie YMCA is sponsoring a 5K run and walk on Saturday, Sept. 20 during Balloon Days.

The race begins at 8 a.m. in McKinley Park. Early bird registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 12 and costs $20, which includes a Core Performance short sleeve T-shirt.

Registration after Sept. 12 costs $25 with no guarantee of a T-shirt.

A children’s fun run will follow the race.

Premium classes

The Southern Prairie YMCA is offering new premium classes this fall, including Spinning and Parkinson’s and Limited Mobility Class.

These programs require registration at the Welcome Center and are offered at an additional cost. Registration is open at the YMCA for these classes that start Sept. 2.

Parkinson’s and Limited Mobility Class will be held on Monday and Wednesdays from 9-10 a.m. This class is designed to help adults of all ages maintain an active lifestyle while focusing on cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility and balance.

The class includes 60 minutes of group exercise under leadership of certified instructor Mandy Henderson. Cost is $40 for members or $50 for non-members.

Spinning offers a combination of strength and endurance training through hill climbs, sprints and athletic drills. Group cycling is an energetic class that leaves the participant in control of his or her own workout by allowing for control of intensity and speed. Class size is limited to five members per month with multiple classes offered. Cost is $64 per month for members.

Kids in Motion

Geared for upper elementary and middle school kids, Kids in Motion is a new fitness program that will feature different physical activities every six weeks, starting Sept. 2.

Strength training, sports conditioning, and back to basics training will be featured. Cardiovascular and muscular strength and endurance will be emphasized. Class is free for Y members and participants can pay a day pass fee to participate. Personal Trainer Dana Dodge will teach this class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:15-5 p.m.

Sporties for Shorties

The Southern Prairie YMCA is offering Sporties for Shorties for boys and girls enrolled in preschool and kindergarten.

This program introduces children to different sports, while developing gross motor skills and coordination. Children will also learn the concepts of team play, sharing and taking turns with a focus on fun.

This program will include the basics of soccer, T-ball, flag football and basketball with a different sport featured each week. The program runs Saturdays, Oct. 11, 18, 25 and Nov. 1 from 9-10 a.m. Cost is $40 for members and $60 for non-members, and includes a T-shirt. Registration deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 1.

Tumbling

Mommy & Me, a new tumbling and play time class, focuses on increasing flexibility, muscle strength and coordination of the child while teaching mothers how to assist their child in growing as a little athlete.

The moms enrolled in Mommy & Me gym classes often benefit physically, as their flexibility and muscle strength increases along with their child’s.

The class is for boys and girls ages 2 to 5, along with their parent/caregiver. Class starts Sept. 2. Cost is $5 per child, per class.

Classes are offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30-10 a.m. and are led by Kalian Smith.

See You at the Pole

The Southern Prairie YMCA Christian Emphasis Committee will be hosting See You at the Pole”on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 7:30 a.m.

See You at the Pole is an annual gathering of Christians of all ages at a flagpole for prayer, scripture-reading and hymn-singing during the early morning. The event will be held rain or shine.

Swimming lessons

Group swimming lessons at the Southern Prairie YMCA are scheduled for Saturday mornings in September. These lessons are for children ages 4 and up.

Class size is limited. Registration deadline is Sept. 3. Specify the child’s swim level and age when signing up.

Swim team

The YMCA Stingrays swim team will be starting Oct. 21. There is a parent meeting on Oct. 14.

Swim team practice is on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Cost is $200, which includes a swimsuit, T-shirt, swim cap, program cost and championship meet entry fees. Children must be a YMCA member and age 6-21 to participate.
