SIOUX CITY — Morningside, which lost to Grand View in last year's playoff semifinal round, begins the 2014 season ranked third in the nation.

Sophomore Alan Smith and redshirt freshman Briar Evans are receivers on the Mustangs squad.

Grand View, defending NAIA national champion, begins the new season ranked No. 1. Grand View won its first football national title last season with a 35-23 win over top-ranked Cumberlands in Rome, Ga., after knocking off Morningside in Des Moines.

Carroll (Montana) is ranked second, in front of Morningside. Northwestern is No. 13 and St. Ambrose is No. 17.
