Lowell Schaefer Diagonal

Lowell Schaefer, 90, of Diagonal died Aug. 20, 2014, at Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Diagonal High School gymnasium. The Rev. Edward Shields and the Rev. Eydie Stephens will officiate. Burial will be in Knowlton Cemetery in Diagonal. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Morris Herrold Post 395 American Legion Diagonal. Open visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Friday with family present 5 to 7 p.m. Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home, 216 Broadway St., Diagonal. Memorials may be given to the United Church of Diagonal building fund. Online condolences may be left at www.watsonarmstrongfh.com.

Lowell Schaefer, son of Bernice (Madison) and Harold Schaefer, was born Sept. 15, 1923, in Creston.

Lowell served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

On Aug. 1, 1942, Lowell married Maxine Collier in Rockport, Mo.

Lowell farmed near Ellston before moving to a farm southeast of Diagonal 46 years ago.

Lowell was a member of Morris Herrold Post 395 American Legion in Diagonal.

Lowell is survived by his children, Carl (Yvonne) Schaefer of Okeechobee, Fla., Jerry (Susan) Schaefer of Creston, Gwendolyn Kay (Don) Jandreau of Washaugal, Wash., Kenneth (Cathy) Schaefer of Diagonal and Michael (Karen) Schaefer of Maloy; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; brother Robert “Bob” (Susan Kinney) Schaefer of Diagonal; and sister, Thresa Willey of Creston and Darlene Ricker of Mount Ayr.

Lowell was preceded in death by his parents; wife May 16, 2010; sister-in-law Betty Schaefer; and brothers-in-law, Eldon Ricker and Donald Willey.
